I've never seen Better Call Saul, but this reminds me a lot of what BoJack Horseman goes through in that series.
I like to call it Asshole Recovery. When you finally have to reckon with how much of a jerk you've been, all the self-loathing that was the root of the behavior to begin with gets amped up 1000%.
